The FLUMEN data-driven sculptures of the Yangtze River were exhibited at the Chinese Pavilion of the Milan Trienial as part of the ‘Living Networks’ exhibition.

They have also been exhibited at Tongji University in Shanghai, China.

Other FLUMEN sculptures have been created for the Tiber and Aniene rivers, and have been exhibited at the Artopia gallery in Milan for the collective show Ricomposizioni.

Life is an intricate web of relationships we are a part of, in which ecological, social, and technological systems interact continuously. These systems operate at and across micro, meso, and macro scales. Inequalities arise when these relationships become imbalanced, weaken, or break. However, within these disruptions lies the potential for recalibration. Living Networks is about designed interventions and touchpoints which make hidden relationships visible, repair damaged connections, or forge new ones that enable kinship and agency.

During his residency at the Ecology and Cultures Innovation Lab at Tongji University of Shanghai, the artist and scientist Andrea Conte (Andreco studio) realized a series of data-driven sculptures utilising the opendata from China National Environmental Monitoring Centre (CNEMC). The sculptures created with parametric models and 3D fabrication aim to intuitively represent the implication of the socio-ecological systems and more-than-human perspectives of the river’s waterscapes.  The Yangtze River in China, the Tiber and Aniene Rivers in Italy and the Pinheiros River in Brazil are selected as points of reference to envision new scenarios and reflect on possible sustainable future environments.

Rivers have always been fundamental to civilizations and to the life of all living beings, how has the relationship between people and rivers changed over time? What if we try to tell a story from the river’s point of view? The science-informed artworks will be the starting point for an open conversation about possible ecological scenarios and intersectoral best-practices for an Ecological Transition and Climate Justice. “Future Environments” is a research project granted by the Italian Council program (2024) promoted by the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity of the Italian Ministry of Culture, which aims to promote Italian contemporary art worldwide.
